She is "uninvited" from her private high school, assigned an unsympathetic caseworker, and forced to attend school in a "Cage" with other HTS kids. Among them are the sweet, smart Gil, and Sean, a lifetime "carrier" who's more protective than violent. Jordan skillfully hints at a rapidly disintegrating, near-future America, using chilling chapter interstitials texts, fragments of interviews, lists that illustrate a society prepared to sacrifice civil rights for an illusion of safety. Are those diagnosed with the HTS gene really destined to kill, or is their behavior the outcome of being treated like criminals? The first half is slow, as Davy feels the impact that the HTS label has on her privileged life, but the action becomes more immediate when Davy, Sean, and Gil are recruited for an elite government school designed to exploit their violent instincts. Davy was everything any girl would of wanted. She was smart and talented. She had the perfect BF. Even a jealous BFF. What she did lack was reality. She couldn't see beyond her perfect bubble of a life until she was uninvited. The best of her wasn't her bright mind and her talent, to me it's the people who surrounded her, who loved her, supported her and cared for her. I knew Zac was too good to be true. All he wanted was what all guys ever want eventually. She was lost in love of herself from the people around her but she couldn't see the true intentions and the facade that bubbled her in. Her protective mother who seemed so helpless but strong. Any mom could react the same way she did, especially if they find out their perfect daughter is doomed and flawed that even society turns their back. Her dad was her pillar, her support system but when that pillar is chipped it crumbled no matter how much money he had . Her brother, not so much the other prodigy child but a best friend. Sean was the opposite of her, everything was different about him. His lack of family, his upbringing. There were times where her mind got the best of her. She wasn't strong mentally, very naive at first which turned into doubtful. As her dream world shattered, she slowly tried to adapt. Although her family was there, she felt alone. Bad DNA doesn't always mean a bad life, especially when she had Gil and Sean. Gil who understood where she came from, so high n going somewhere to isolated, hated with no control of their future. Sean was this protective bubble, scary but gentle. The way their world was turning out, how these people were labeled, that can be anyone. Even without the kill code in their DNA. Anyone can snap, it takes self control n common sense. Some of these killers are just plain psychopaths. Tattoos don't make you a killer. A hard life doesn't break you. Money doesn't buy everything, not even freedom. Power has the upper hand and sometimes all you got is faith and the people who love you. Self control, inner strength, physical stamina and a big heart. Screw the government!
