“Flowerheart is like a garden in full bloom: vibrant and sweet, whimsical and wondrous.” —Allison Saft, New York Times bestselling author of A Far Wilder Magic
Perfect for fans of Margaret Rogerson and Tamora Pierce, this stand-alone YA debut is a stunning cottagecore fantasy romance about a girl with powerful and violent magic that she must learn to control—or lose everything she loves.
Clara’s magic has always been wild. But it’s never been dangerous. Then a simple touch causes poisonous flowers to bloom in her father’s chest.
The only way to heal him is to cast an extremely difficult spell that requires perfect control. And the only person willing to help is her former best friend, Xavier, who’s grown from a sweet, shy child into someone distant and mysterious.
Xavier asks a terrible price in return, knowing Clara will give anything to save her father. As she struggles to reconcile the new Xavier with the boy she once loved, she discovers how many secrets he’s hiding. And as she hunts for the truth, she instead finds the root of a terrible darkness that’s taken hold in the queendom—a darkness only Clara’s magic is powerful enough to stop.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Sixteen-year-old Clara Lucas's innate magic has always been out of control, resulting in overgrown flora and damaged property, but it has never harmed anyone until she accidentally curses her father, whose chest suddenly blooms with poisonous flowers. The only way to cure him is to perform a blessing, a complex spell for which she's never completed training. Desperate to prevent his seemingly inevitable death, she turns to Xavier Morwyn, 16, a childhood friend turned calculating government magician, asking him to help her tame her magic. Though countless mentors have failed to accomplish the task, he agrees—and also offers to remove her wild magic by absorbing it into himself, post-blessing, to give her a chance at a peaceful life. As the pair work together, Clara learns the reason why Xavier pulled away from her all those years ago and uncovers secrets surrounding a mysterious potion cursing the populace. Bakewell (We Are the Song) delivers a sensitively cultivated magic system that, as evidenced by the anxiety that makes it difficult for Clara to control her abilities, operates as a commentary on mental illness and its effects on one's ability to move through the world. It's an uplifting and meaningful tale bursting with floral imagery and cottagecore aesthetics. Main characters cue as white. Ages 13–up.

Absolutely Magical
Honestly I had been in a bit of a slump with not picking very good books. But this one! And honestly I don’t give out 5 stars easily unless I’m in love.
From the cover to the back was filled with such a magical journey, that dealt with some heavy topics. This book was a good, short read. I felt drawn in but it was short enough for me to read in a few days. The author had a way to keep it light, even though dealing with dark thoughts. I love that this book dabbled in self doubt, and even parental doubt with other characters. One of my favorite parts about this book was the inclusion of what the flowers meanings were as they appeared in the book. It was a cute love story inside the magic journey to bless her father back to health, and the fact he never gave up hope for his little witch was just heart melting. Plus the rediscovery of friends to lovers and overcoming Xavier’s secret and his fears. Only thing I wish is we got to explore more of Clara’s mother and her coven, but it leaves room for another book in the future if she wishes. Still was a good enough ending to be THE END.
