Publisher Description

An internationally bestselling comic novel in which a man—with the help of a bunny—suddenly realizes what’s important in life

“Escapism at its best . . . Just pure fun.” —NPR.org

“Which of us has not had that wonderfully seditious idea: to play hooky for a while from life as we know it?” With these words from his foreword, Pico Iyer puts his finger on the exhilaratingly anarchic appeal of The Year of the Hare, a novel in the bestselling tradition of Watership Down, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, and Life of Pi.

While out on assignment, a journalist hits a hare with his car. This small incident becomes life-changing: he decides to quit his job, leave his wife, sell his possessions, and spend a year wandering the wilds of Finland—with the bunny as his boon companion.

What ensues is a series of comic misadventures, as everywhere they go—whether chased up a tree by dogs, or to a formal state dinner, or in pursuit of a bear across the Finnish border with Russia—they leave mayhem (and laughter!) in their wake.

Don't Know Why I Hadn't Heard of this Before

A classic of subversive literature. Many laughs.

A reminder of our slow-baked Humanity in a fast-paced world.

I stumbled upon this book at 2010's turn of the year; 2011, it would seem is China's 'Year of the Hare.'

The tale of this Hare & his owner mixes observations on just what it takes to maintain one's Humanity in a world that is consistently overburdened with illusory thought. Humanity, it seems, has a solid basis rooted in Animality.

Overall, I learned this: Forgetting (or suppressing, as it more often the case) where we came from just leaves room for more confusion. Remembering one's roots, one's Animality (which is marked in the story by initial feelings of discomfort), can bring one closer to their true being.

Further, one's true being, upon observation by the observer as their own (no small task in & of itself), can never be recaptured fully by society-at-large through fear tactics (legislative games, fancy wordplay, etc). No one or no thing can contain a truly free spirit.
