Based on George Lucas's original screenplay and story, Stover's smart, efficient novelization isn't as humorous as the last of the Star Wars films, but it's packed full of stunning fight scenes, entertaining interludes with Obi-Wan Kenobi and delightful Yodaspeak ("Named must your fear be, before banish it you can"). Picking up where the movie left off, Stover (Star Wars: Shatterpoint) makes a heartfelt attempt at deepening the characterizations of Anakin Skywalker and his secret wife, Senator Padme Amidala. Haunted by his failed attempt to save his mother's life and having a premonition of Padme dying in childbirth, Skywalker chooses to serve Sidious, the Dark Lord of the Sith, in order to learn how to make his wife immortal. The official novelization of Star Wars Revenge Of The Sith is based on both the story and screenplay by George Lucas. Because of this fact, the book communicates the same story as the movie but with much extended scenes as well as some altered details such as dialog. The tale of Anakin Skywalker's fall to the dark side is nicely fleshed out in this novel and I have to say that once things get rolling the book is hard to put down.
If you plan on reading James Luceno's Labyrinth Of Evil, I suggest that you do so before reading this novel. Luceno's prequel is excellent, but once you have read Revenge Of The Sith there is really no need to go back in time and read Labyrinth Of Evil. Matthew Stover does a fine job of delivering this story in a fully understandable format, even if you haven't read any Star Wars novels from the expanded universe.
Over all, this novel is a good thick one with all the great stuff that you expect from Star Wars. Several references to events that occurred in previous expanded universe novels are scattered throughout this book but there aren't so many that you would get lost if you haven't read those novels. So, if you are a fan of all things Star Wars or if you haven't yet explored beyond the movies, I believe that you will enjoy this dramatic story.
