Publisher Description

The author's world encompasses dilapidated fight arenas, state mental hospitals & chaotic emergency rooms. The inhabitants are his brilliantly etched characters, who battle desperately against fate in a game of life they cannot win but dare not lose. As we approach the end of the century & the millennium, no one writes better or more vividly than Jones does about the personal, private apocalypses we all face in our darkest moments. In one story, a Vietnam vet, a Recon Marine, swims alone across the English Channel, the Straits of Gibraltar, & the Bosporus to maintain "the edge" that kept him alive in wartime - & that is all he now has left. In another, a brilliant doctor verges on a breakdown. In the title story, a young amateur fighter stoically endures repetitive beatings because he knows the world of boxing shields & protects him from the even crueler world outside of the ring. A number of these stories have appeared in different forms in the New Yorker, Playboy, & Esquire.

So Good it Could Ruin You

It's dumbfounding how someone this good, this phenomenal of a writer as Thom Jones can slip beneath the radar of so many avid readers for so long. I discovered Jones when first happening across a short story called 'Mouses' in the 'New Yorker.' I was laughing out loud. I got hysterical. My mind was blown. My literary life was forever changed. I was in college at the time. So when I first discovered Jones my immediate, almost instinctive, reaction was to run my copy of the New Yorker straight to the library's Xerox machine, where I began plugging in all the loose change I could find, and burning off copies for my friends. I was collating and stapling like I'd lost my mind. This was just too good to not get the news out. Others had to know. They had to see. I was a changed man. From Jones I would discover Chuck Palahniuk. From Palahniuk, Amy Hempel. The list goes on and on. But Jones was my initiation into this little world of the modern masters and the art of Minimalist/You-are-tangibly-there Literature. This book contains the story 'Mouses' which is pure genius but still only the tip of an enormous iceberg. Be forewarned, writing this good can severely effect your ability to read just anything. It's a road that only leads one way. There's really no going back. But it's the best path I've to take. Best wishes and happy reading.
