I love the realness to the characters
What I like most about Briggs's novels and Mercy Thompson, in particular, is that even though this is an Urban Fantasy series, her characters are still very real, very flawed, and extremely three dimensional. I love that Briggs isn't afraid to dive in and write the flaws that come along with marriage and being a woman. She writes about Mercy's insecurities, and I love that she doesn't make her characters have perfect lives.
I relate to Mercy on many levels as a woman working in a man's field, as a wife and all that comes with that job. Thank goodness I do not relate to anything else in her life. I don't have fantastical beings trying to kill, eat, posses, or anything else to me and mine, but I love reading about everything going on with Mercy. This time around, it is a mysterious Smoke Beast trying to posses Mercy and her loved ones.
This is one of my favorite novels in the series so far. I loved the messiness with Mercy and Adam. I loved the realness of things, not always being perfect and not knowing how to fix it.
I am giving Smoke Bitten 5 Boundless Star, and I loved it.
