NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the critically acclaimed author of One of Us Is Lying comes a new page-turning mystery. Be sure to keep your friends close . . . and your secrets closer.
Four years ago, Brynn left Saint Ambrose School following the shocking murder of her favorite teacher—a story that made headlines after the teacher’s body was found by three Saint Ambrose students in the woods behind their school. The case was never solved. Now that Brynn is moving home and starting her dream internship at a true-crime show, she’s determined to find out what really happened.
The kids who found Mr. Larkin are her way in, and her ex–best friend, Tripp Talbot, was one of them. Without his account of events, the other two kids might have gone down for Mr. Larkin’s murder—but instead, thanks to Tripp, they're now at the top of the Saint Ambrose social pyramid. Tripp’s friends have never forgotten what Tripp did for them that day, and neither has he. Just like he hasn’t forgotten that everything he told the police was a lie.
Digging into the past is bound to shake up the present, and when Brynn begins to investigate what happened in the woods that day, she uncovers secrets that might change everything—about Saint Ambrose, about Mr. Larkin, and about her ex-best friend, Tripp Talbot.
Four years ago someone got away with murder. More terrifying is that they might be closer than anyone thinks.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Desperate for a win after she's fired from her school newspaper and wait-listed by her dream college, Brynn Gallagher, 17, lands an internship at a true crime TV show by pitching a story from her own past in McManus's (You'll Be the Death of Me) most impressive mystery yet. When Brynn was an eighth grader at Saint Ambrose prep school in Sturgis, Mass., three classmates, including Brynn's estranged best friend, Tripp Talbot, went into the woods and stumbled across the corpse of the school's popular new English teacher, William Larkin. Though Shane's fingerprints were found on the murder weapon, the trio were purportedly never suspects, and the case went cold. Shortly thereafter, Brynn and her family relocated to Chicago, but now they're back in Sturgis, and Brynn intends to use her re-enrollment at Saint Ambrose—and her internship—to uncover the thorny truth surrounding Mr. Larkin's death. Brynn and Tripp's candid, emotionally complex alternating first-person accounts enrich character while imparting immediacy and drive. The central whodunit spirals into myriad tertiary puzzles, making for a serpentine read rife with convincing red herrings and ground-shifting reveals. Main characters cue as white; the supporting cast is ethnically diverse. Ages 14–up.

Haven’t read one book by this author that I haven’t enjoyed
While I was able to accurately guess one tiny twist at the start, I was surprised with quite a few others along the middle and towards the end. However, once more- I was able to predict who the killer was- but NOT for the reasons/how/why that I thought.
Anyways, I have enjoyed all of the books that I have written by this author, but this was probably my least favorite. That being said, I’m still glad I read it and I do believe it’s the perfect book to grab when you’re in the mood for something light yet somewhat thrilling blended with a whodunnit.
I did have one issue with the main characters actions (that I’ll omit due to not wanting to spoil anything) and for that, I think I was a bit disappointed lol. And for that, I give it a 3.5 but round up to 4 because I like this author.
Omg good
i read this in a couple hours and it was very good. All the characters are well developed and interesting and i was genuinely shocked by the plot twist in the end. i did suspect the murderer from the get go but it has so many turns and twists that while i had the person right i could have never guessed the conclusion. Great book for a deep read or a light read (depends on u lol) but i thoroughly enjoyed this book
INCREDIBLE!!
This was my fourth book by Karen McManus, and by far the best. The plot was so developed and so insanely complicated but simple at the same time. It got me so convinced the killer was his guy, then so convinced it wasn’t, and then convinced again it was. It was a mind blowing story and so suspenseful at times. At times, I was scared to turn the page because I didn’t know what would happen.
