Publisher Description
A prequel to the New York Times best-selling novel Queen's Shadow, further exploring the life of the iconic Padmé Amidala!
When fourteen-year-old Padmé Naberrie wins the election for Queen of Naboo, she adopts the name Amidala and leaves her family to the rule from the royal palace. To keep her safe and secure, she'll need a group of skilled handmaidens who can be her assistants, confidantes, defenders, and decoys. Each girl is selected for her particular talents, but it will be up to Padmé to unite them as a group. When Naboo is invaded by forces of the Trade Federation, Queen Amidala and her handmaidens will face the greatest test--of themselves, and of each other.

Great
Padame is one of my favorite characters.
Pre-Episode I filler
First of all, this is a girly book. I have no problem with this, half of Star Wars fans these days are girls and all. But this novels goes quite a bit into depth about, well, girly topics - Padme’s make up and dress are discussed in multiple instances in excruciating detail. And also that Padme has periods. Can’t be allowed to forget that.
That being said, this novel does a decent job creating a back story for Padme’s handmaidens and why they had this whole body-double system in the first place. It explains how Padme got her weapons training, her lockpicking skills, why she knows how to use a grapple gun, and even why she has a monotone when speaks as a Queen, and all of it makes sense.
There is no action in this novel except and save for that which happens in Episode I, which this novel merges into. Once it gets to those events, the novel goes fairly quickly.
Being a Disney novel you might be worrying about the woke content of the novel. It wasn’t too bad in this book. One of her handmaidens is revealed to be a 12-year-old lesbian, which is kind of creepy and really doesn’t advance the plot, but I guess it kind of makes the character stand out.
My main criticism of the book is that it’s basically backstory for Padme and her handmaidens that, in my opinion, could have been better covered in a short story rather than a full-length novel or audiobook.
