Very Insightful

I give this book 5/5 stars and I don't rate this lightly. Not only does this book provide a different perspective on how to view trauma, anxiety, friendships, and much more, it also provides a 5 minute challenge at the end of each chapter. There are books out there that will educate you but not give "homework" or tools that are realistic. I like books that are interactive and give you something to sit on or think about. I believe people learn best when not only reading or listening to Information but also practicing it to get a feel of what it's like.

The author also notes at the beginning of the book to take what applies and leave the rest. I kept this in mind when reading the book. She's also said..

"The information in this book refers to those for whom choice, relative safety and access to resources is readily available. The information in this book does not apply to situations of abuse, oppression, enslavement, severe and persistent mental illness, power differentials, or systemic racism. Any practices that encourage you to examine your self talk or to "change your mind to change your mood" have the potential to be toxic and victim blaming. As a general rule "managing your thoughts" works only if you're in a safe environment where choices are available."

When I am learning something new, I take it all in thinking it can apply to me, which in reality, what works for someone else may not work for me, and vice versa.

I've been doing my best to read this book when I am not in therapy. I treat it as a study guide, my therapy sessions as classes, and apply what I have learned from both to the test, my current situation.

Some of my favorite chapters are 1, 2, 3 and, 9. I've done lots of highlighting in this book as well.

I would definitely recommend this book if you are feeling stuck, need to challenge yourself, or feel like learning something new. I guarantee you will finish the book learning a new skill to apply to your situation. If your situation is currently causing significant distress, perhaps get into therapy (if you have the means) before starting this book. It's obviously not a replacement for therapy but can be beneficial to read while working with a mental health professional.
