The daughter of Viva, an actress and one of Andy Warhol’s superstars, and French filmmaker Michel Auder, Alexandra Auder digs heavily into the period of her youth following her parents’ divorce, which found her bouncing around the country with her unmoored mother before eventually returning to NYC and the famed Chelsea Hotel. Auder deconstructs that bohemian childhood with affection, but also with the clear-eyed vision of adulthood. Should she really have been so responsible for her baby sister, actress Gaby Hoffmann, as a preteen? Probably not, but it somehow seemed normal in the portrait she paints of ’80s Manhattan. Narrating the audiobook, Auder provides great imitations of her friends and family. Whether you’re a fan of Warhol’s Factory or you’re just fascinated by unusual family dynamics, you’ll find plenty to consider in the complexities of Don’t Call Me Home.
