Publisher Description

The first book in Peter Ackroyd's history of England series, which has since been followed up with two more installments, Tudors and Rebellion.

In Foundation, the chronicler of London and of its river, the Thames, takes us from the primeval forests of England's prehistory to the death, in 1509, of the first Tudor king, Henry VII. He guides us from the building of Stonehenge to the founding of the two great glories of medieval England: common law and the cathedrals. He shows us glimpses of the country's most distant past--a Neolithic stirrup found in a grave, a Roman fort, a Saxon tomb, a medieval manor house--and describes in rich prose the successive waves of invaders who made England English, despite being themselves Roman, Viking, Saxon, or Norman French.

With his extraordinary skill for evoking time and place and his acute eye for the telling detail, Ackroyd recounts the story of warring kings, of civil strife, and foreign wars. But he also gives us a vivid sense of how England's early people lived: the homes they built, the clothes the wore, the food they ate, even the jokes they told. All are brought vividly to life in this history of England through the narrative mastery of one of Britain's finest writers.

Fascinating story of organized crime

From the Mesolithic peoples to the Romans and Celts and Danes, to Alfred up through the first of the Tudors, this entertaining and brisk history does a great job of explaining how thugs, crime lords and Mafiosa ran England through one reign of lawless violence after another. It’s a credit to the writing and amazing details that the book never gets repetitive, because the history of English medieval monarchs is one long receptive cycle of sociopaths duking it out for what was usually a short and toxic reign.
I learned two things: England NEVER had a single decent monarch in this period, not once, not even Alfred. I haven’t started Part 2, but I’m pretty sure Henry VIII doesn’t break the pattern.
It’s not a huge surprise to hear that chivalry was a myth and joke, but it was surprising to realize that every single monarch (even Shakespeare’s favorite, Henry V) was a venal, paranoid, murderous tyrant.
Secondly, I hope anyone who believes democracy is for snowflakes understands that the alternative is horrifying no matter what side you’re on, because a lot of these egopathic greedy self-obsessed psychos reminded me of some recent politicians who are more than willing to turn on each other as it suits them.
Strong man rule means chaos and death for a nation.
History repeated itself over and over again in the illiteracy of the English medieval ages; we have no excuse for it now.
Highly recommend!
