You think you know this story.
You do not.
A harsh, controlling father. A quiescent mother. A house that feels like anything but a home. Natasha gathers the strength to leave, and comes upon a little house in the wood: A house that walks about on chicken feet and is inhabited by a fairy tale witch. In finding Baba Yaga, Natasha finds her voice, her power, herself....
"Jane Yolen is a phenomenon: a poet and a mythmaker, who understands how old stories can tell us new things. We are lucky to have her."—Neil Gaiman

Both Contemporary & Folkloric!
Jane Yolen is a master storyteller, with over 365 books to her credit. In “Finding Baba Yaga” she tells the story of a contemporary girl who runs away from her dysfunctional home. She discovers a new home as an apprentice to the famous witch, living in her magical house that moves itself on chicken legs.
This book is appropriately subtitled “A Short Novel in Verse” as it is told in the form of a number of poems. Each one shows a scene in the journey of the girl to find and be taken in by Baba Yaga, to make her life with the famous witch, then in the end to tell us her tale. I have to admit it has been a while since I have read an novel told in the form of poetry, but this one suits its subject matter. After a while you are so engrossed in the story, you hardly notice the way it is told.
