"The perfect holiday gift for animal lovers.” – Publisher’s Weekly
This Christmas mystery, featuring criminal defense lawyer Andy Carpenter and his faithful golden retriever, Tara, showcases Rosenfelt’s trademark humor and larger-than-life characters.
Reluctant lawyer Andy Carpenter doesn’t usually stop to help others, but seeing a dog next to a homeless man inspires him to give the pair some money to help. It’s just Andy’s luck that things don’t end there. Soon after Andy’s encounter with them, man and dog are attacked in the middle of the night on the street. The dog defends its new owner, and the erstwhile attacker is bitten but escapes. But the dog is quarantined and the man, Don Carrigan, is heartbroken.
Andy’s wife Laurie can’t resist helping the duo after learning Andy has met them before… it’s the Christmas season after all. In a matter of days Don and his dog Zoey are living above Andy’s garage and become two new additions to the family. It’s not until Andy accidentally gives away his guest’s name during an interview that things go awry; turns out Don is wanted for a murder that happened two years ago. Don not only claims he’s innocent, but that he had no idea that he was wanted for a crime he has no knowledge of in the first place. It’s up to Andy to exonerate his new friend, if he doesn’t get pulled into the quagmire first.
David Rosenfelt’s signature wit, charm, and cleverness are back again in this most exciting installment yet.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In Edgar-finalist Rosenfelt's enchanting Christmas-themed 18th mystery featuring Paterson, N.J., attorney Andy Carpenter (after Rescued), Andy's wife, Laurie, urges him to offer their garage apartment to a homeless veteran, Don Carrigan, and his dog. When Carrigan is arrested for murder, Andy takes the case (and the dog), even though he isn't sure of his client's innocence. The ensuing investigation uncovers links to a sniper working in the area and to a complex, chilling plot that threatens not only Carrigan's future but others' lives, including Andy's. Along with his trademark courtroom twists, Rosenfelt provides a compassionate look at the plight of veterans suffering from PTSD. Series fans will appreciate the chance to catch up with Andy's family, dogs, and investigative team, while new readers will find this feel-good tale a good introduction to the series. Plenty of humor, a passion for animal rescue, and a healthy dose of Christmas cheer, courtesy of Laurie, make this the perfect holiday gift for animal lovers.)
Customer Reviews
Tara and company
I believe this book was one of my favorites in this series. I’m not even sure why…. Great writing and great storyline.
Twists and turns galore.
I didn’t see the resolution coming. Loved the humor and uncliched prose. Mr. Rosenfelt is a master author!
Andy and his series keep getting better
I wasn’t sure about the direction the story was taking out the outset. It was a bit creaky, repetitive. Andy can lean on his snark too much, and there are pieces of the series that don’t need to be retrieved, but about half way through, the plot and Andy’s voice really take off. I figure out who the villain was quickly enough, but the logic behind it all, and Andy’s unraveling the skein is pretty brilliant. Not to mention that I love Laurie and Marcus. More of them, more stars. That’s the deal.
