Black Queerness at its finest
I’ve had my eye on this book for quite some time now, especially after it made its way to the Banned List. I must say I’m actually upset, but not for the reason you may think.
Like the author I too wanted to write about my experiences as a Black Queer Person growing up, I found myself unable to do so however because I just wasn’t sure how to share my experience with everyone.
I normally don’t throw the word masterpiece around but I’m going to give this book 5 stars. Following the adventures of Matthew this book perfectly incorporates the struggles and feelings that most Black Queer Boys experience throughout there lifetime. While much more issues could still be addressed this book scratches the surface and brings out subjects that were afraid to talk about.
One of the many highlights of this book for me is the positive attitude the family has toward Matthew regarding his Sexuality. More Black Families need to be able to discuss this with their children and help them the best way they can instead of blindly turning to homophobia.
I wish I had this book growing up, it definitely would have been helpful to me to know someone was sharing the same feelings I had.
I definitely recommend this book to all.
