Great writing…
and writing and writing. I’m glad I read one of Kristin Hannah’s book, but doubt I’ll read another. Ms. Whelan was fantastic as ever, but overall, it is heartbreakingly drawn out and the ending was anti-climactic. No happy ending here. From what I’ve read though, the descriptions of the times and conditions were pretty spot on.
Heartbreaking
Wow it was hard to swallow such hardship. Made worse by the fact that this actually happened in the US in the 1930’s. The parallels to things still happening today are a grim reminder of the lack of sympathy and compassion that exists from humans. I had a really hard time getting through the story because it was so sad. But if you enjoy history this is a great read of that time from a woman and mothers perspective. As a mother we will do anything for our children.
