Vastly Underwhelming
So….a pampered, sheltered, extremely wealthy barely adult girl who ONLY difficulty in her entire life is being teased about her “curse” of telekinetic abilities, gets everything she wants including the man she wants. That’s supposed to be what the reader roots for?
We’re supposed to believe that having telekinesis powers would be “looked down on” and “poor her” for having them? Um. What?
The “villain” is a woman who was victimized by a mysogynistic culture, did as her family ordered, and was left emotionally traumatized and hardening herself to survive it? She felt like a flat, convenient prop for a story that needed a villain to move the plot forward.
A plot which, unfortunately, is utterly predictable and characters that act in completely unrealistic ways, with forced dialogues. Having them say things that make no sense for anyone to say except to make the scene go the predictable route the author is heading. Prime example (without too many spoilers) the duel scene. Ugh. Eye roll.
Also, if, like me, you come across this book in the SciFi & Fantasy genre…it’s a lie. It’s literally victorian-era France/Paris just under different names, with the random tiny drips of 2 characters doing parlor trick level telekinesis. In no way does this fall into SciFi/Fantasy.
