If only I could stay with you forever. I would.
Eric is having a hard time adjusting to his family’s move from California to Utah. Then he meets Grace—his classmate and a runaway—dumpster diving behind the burger joint where he works. Eric decides the only thing to do is to hide Grace in the clubhouse in his backyard.
With the adults concerned about the looming Cuban Missile Crisis and his father recovering from an immune disorder, Eric grows closer to Grace but can their new relationship survive the harsh realities of life?
In this poignant, sensitive, and realistic narrative, Richard Paul Evans shares Grace’s heartbreaking predicament and Eric’s realization that everything is not as simple as it might appear.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
A ninth grader's world is forever changed in Evan's holiday present to his fans. Eric is still adjusting to his family's move from California to Utah when he discovers runaway classmate Grace dumpster diving behind the burger joint where he works. A concerned Eric and his younger brother, Joel, hide Grace in their backyard clubhouse. Meanwhile, the Cuban Missile Crisis looms, and the boys' father is recovering from Guillain-Barre and their mother is overworked, so there are plenty of distractions to keep the grown-ups ignorant of the goings-on. Evans portrays Grace's heartbreaking predicament with sensitivity and also touches on how the political situation affected the era's youth ("The possibility of a nuclear holocaust was just something we always carried around in the back of our minds, like an overdue library book"). Evans knows how to pull on the heartstrings, and the conclusion to this one will have readers reaching for a hankie.

See AllRemembering Grace
My husband read this book years ago and remembers it to this day. I read it to find out what was so special about it. As a pregnant first-time mother, my heart melted as this story unfolded. The teenage couple's romance draws you in, and all their tragedies make you stay to see them through. What a touching, amazing holiday story.
Sad
I love all of Richard Paul Evans books, although this was definitely my least favorite. This book is beautiful, but sad. If you're looking for a happy ending book, this book is not for you.
Grace
Excellent book very moving as all Richard Paul Evan's books are. If you haven't read this yet I recommend you read it.
