Now the subject of the Lifetime original movie An Amish Murder
Sworn to Silence is the first in Linda Castillo's New York Times bestselling Kate Burkholder series.
A killer is preying on sacred ground....
In the sleepy rural town of Painters Mill, Ohio, the Amish and "English" residents have lived side by side for two centuries. But sixteen years ago, a series of brutal murders shattered the peaceful farming community. In the aftermath of the violence, the town was left with a sense of fragility, a loss of innocence. Kate Burkholder, a young Amish girl, survived the terror of the Slaughterhouse Killer but came away from its brutality with the realization that she no longer belonged with the Amish.
Now, a wealth of experience later, Kate has been asked to return to Painters Mill as Chief of Police. Her Amish roots and big city law enforcement background make her the perfect candidate. She's certain she's come to terms with her past—until the first body is discovered in a snowy field. Kate vows to stop the killer before he strikes again. But to do so, she must betray both her family and her Amish past—and expose a dark secret that could destroy her.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Linda Castillo’s tense mystery Sworn to Silence introduces the flawed but compelling Kate Burkholder, who grew up in an Ohio Amish community before she left to become a cop. Now, as her hometown’s police chief, a series of brutal murders forces her to revisit a troubling secret from her teenage years alongside rough-edged state detective John Tomasetti. How the two officers deal with their traumatic pasts is as fascinating as the case they’re on. Audie-winning actress Kathleen McInerney’s narration shines, especially when she’s reading Burkholder and Tomasetti’s dialogue, which believably moves from wary to intimate as they zero in on the killer.

Absolutely loved this
Very well written, with a depth of knowledge about law enforcement, a medical examiner’s work and the Amish culture. The fact that she graduated from two police academies impressed me. Castillo is a pro.
And a bouquet of compliments to the narrator. Fantastic command of all the voices, both female and male. Marvelous work.
Frustrating
Simply tried too hard with the unnecessary adjectives and descriptive words. “Estee Lauder make-up” was one of the most bizarre. Unsure how much the narrator contributed to the disappointing read, but it was hard to listen to and I was unable to finish it.
Incredibly predictable
This book was recommended to me after I read “the silent patient” by the algorithm Apple Books offers. I figured it’d be close to that caliber of a read but it was not. The lead protagonist is a female detective with a chip on her shoulder and inclined to have redundant thoughts. The author spent a lot of time simply establishing the gruesome horrors of the crimes but followed them with “the worst things anyone could imagine”. I felt myself rolling my eyes at some of the cliched statements.
If you’re into detective novels that remind you of something you’d pick up a lá John Grisham But with an Amish twist and a female detective. Pick this book up.
