Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere... else.
But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.
Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced... they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.
But Nancy's arrival marks a change at the Home. There's a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it's up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of things.
No matter the cost.
PRAISE FOR EVERY HEART A DOORWAY
"Seanan McGuire has long been one of the smartest writers around, and with this novella we can easily see that her heart is as big as her brain. We know this story isn't true, but it is truth." — Charlaine Harris, New York Times bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series (TV's True Blood)
"Seanan McGuire once again demonstrates her intimate knowledge of the human heart in a powerful fable of loss, yearning and damaged children." — Paul Cornell, author of London Falling and Witches of Lychford
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Fantasy books are full of kids discovering incredible new worlds after falling down rabbit holes or wandering into wardrobes. But what happens after they come back to the real world? According to the first novella in fantasy writer Seanan McGuire’s warmhearted and entertaining series, they’re carted off to Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children. The book follows a plucky young character named Nancy, who leads the investigation when her Wayward peers start turning up dead. Luckily, Nancy—whose own magical journey was to the Underworld—is perfectly suited to hunt down the killer. Actress Cynthia Hopkins creates unique voices for McGuire’s diverse cast of characters, communicating both the tension of the murder investigation and the magic of worlds hidden within our own. Don’t be surprised if you start looking at your surroundings a little differently—the next secret doorway could be just around the corner.

This book eats
I enjoyed this one a lot! The characters although narrated by the same person all have their own feel and the story itself was interesting. I just started the second one
Stopped at chapter 4
Started listening and was excited about the ideas presented in this book until I got to chapter 3 or 4. I stopped listening at chapter 4. I didn’t like the new material introduced in those chapters and didn’t want to listen any farther.
