Everyone has something to hide in John Hart’s gritty crime thriller. Elizabeth Black is a veteran detective whose hard exterior hides her empathy for victims, which may have led her to cross the line in a horrifying recent case. Her former idol, Adrian Wall, is an ex-cop who just served 13 years in prison on a questionable murder charge. When he’s finally released, the long-simmering tensions surrounding these damaged people finally boil over, unearthing a violent conspiracy that rocks their small North Carolina town to its foundations. Suspense is everything in this Southern-fried mystery. As the body count rises and grim new secrets come to light, Hart masterfully teases out the truth bit by bit. We were totally absorbed by Hart’s almost poetic prose, which he uses to greatest effect when describing the most disturbing scenes. Narrator Scott Shepherd’s gruff but measured approach is perfect for this mix of eloquence and horror. Redemption Road had us utterly entranced, even—maybe especially—at its darkest moments.
