Publisher Description
America is on the brink of crisis. Unless we can curb our dangerous appetite for foreign oil, petroleum-rich countries and speculators will bring our economy to its knees…long before CO2 emissions will devastate our ecosystem. The President has answered the call with the Dakota District Initiative, a top secret research team hidden deep in the Badlands of North Dakota. The Initiative is developing a way to produce clean energy from coal.
But powerful enemies will stop at nothing to sabotage this revolutionary technology. A cadre of oil hedge fund managers hires a crew of mercenary fanatics to attack the Initiative's experimental power station. Despite the bloody assault, the research continues as war-hero sheriff Nate Osborne and brash journalist Ashley Borden search for the attackers.
The stakes couldn't be higher: Unless the Initiative succeeds we could be faced with gasoline at twenty dollars per gallon or more, putting an impossible strain on an already fragile economy. If the project fails, we will continue to poison the very air we breathe. Either way, the Badlands will run red with blood.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Former U.S. senator Dorgan (Take This Job and Ship It: How Corporate Greed and Brain-Dead Politics Are Selling Out America), assisted by bestseller Hagberg (Abyss), makes good use of his energy affairs expertise in this exciting eco thriller. A secret government project in the North Dakota Badlands, the Dakota District Initiative, seeks to inject bacteria into coal seams to create methane that can be burned to produce electricity. If successful, this pollution-free process could solve America's energy needs for four or five centuries, and foil the oil producing nations and the rapacious businesses that benefit from them. Wealthy hedge fund director D.S. Wood hires Posse Comitatus warrior Barry Egan and a group of like-minded wing-nuts to blow up the Initiative and save the world for big oil. A hardy cast of scientists, military men, and ordinary folk join forces to stop Wood and his henchmen. The authors smoothly blend near-constant action and cutting-edge science.

Fact or fiction?
The book keeps you turning the page and you can't help but ask yourself - what is fact and what is fiction? You'll enjoy this.
Lala land
This is not a techno thriller. This is a fantasy book for nuts who think Al Gore is a scientist. Man made CO2 absorbs about 0.0064% of the sun's energy. Water, water vapor and humidity absorb 95% of the sun's energy. Any competent scientist can read our earth's atmospheric transmission spectra and see that water is the only significant green house gas. This CO2 end of the world crap drives me crazy. I don't like political lies and distortions as a theme for my pleasure reading. It is no fun to read if there is not a small bit of potential truth the book's story.
