An incredible first novel, and a wonderful start to a new series
There are many times when reading a book where we split off from the character we've been following to explore a new character. Often, this leaves me with a less than pleasant taste in my mouth, because I was enjoying spending time with the original character, and didn't feel like branching out. And then there are books like this one, where each new character and subplot introduced leave me satisfied, yet wanting more, so that I don't even care so much about the main plot as I do about the world in which it occurs.
I read some reviews which say this book is not exciting. I heartily disagree, although I can kind of see where they get that impression. This is a book that builds. I was hooked from the first page by the writing style, but if it's action you're after, this is not a book for instant gratification. Having said that, because we spent so much time getting to know the characters, when the action does come, it is intense, intense, intense!
If you love westerns, read this book. If you love intriguing characters, read this book. If you love a good, solid, rip-roarin' yarn, read! this! book!!
Great read
Like HP Lovecraft, China Mieville, and Louis L'Amour all rolled into one, the Six-Gun Tarot takes place on the post-Civil War old west. There are a myriad of interesting characters, story lines, and dark mythologies built into this astoundingly original work. Equally as important, Belcher proves a good story teller who grab your interest within a few pages and not let go. It makes not only for a fun and thrilling read, but the hope that this is only the first in a series to be enjoyed over the years.
Great Read
An apocalyptic western with a steampunk influence? Who would have thought? I am so glad I took a chance on this book! I can't wait for the next one!
