Going from romance to rescue requires some serious gear-shifting, as well as a little backup. Her best friend, Billy, and Mark, the CIA agent she's been crushing on for years—both skilled adaptors—step in to help, but their priority is, annoyingly, keeping her safe. Before long, Ciel is dedicating more energy to escaping their watchful eyes than she is to saving her client's intended.
Suddenly, facing down a horde of Vikings feels like the least of her problems.

In this sparkling series opener, Ciel Halligan is not a shape-shifter, but she does have a genetic quirk that allows her to look like someone else by changing her aura. Ciel has cunningly turned this ability into a profession as a "life coach": instead of instructing her wealthy clients, Ciel poses as them to solve their problems. When Ciel goes undercover as socialite Mina Worthington to facilitate her engagement, she assumes the worst that could happen is a sunburn and the odd bit of sand in her bikini. That's before she nearly gets blown sky-high by a bomb meant for Mina's prospective fianc and has to turn sleuth to investigate his disappearance. The wisecracking, whirlwind romp of a romantic urban fantasy adventure gradually spirals into the ludicrous, but endearing characters will satisfy readers willing to shrug off plot holes for the sake of fun.

In a Fix
Being a fan of both Diana Gabaldon and Janet Evanovich I was eager to see how this book stacks up. I have two measures of how much I like a book: how fast do I read it and do I go back to read it again. This passed both of these tests. I read it in a day, sneaking it at work, and re-read parts after I finished. The story was well paced and the love/romance was intriguing. I am not a reviewer who will recap the plot, I figure that is why you read the book.
A couple of things that kept me from loving this book: the men are so obnoxious and overbearing to Ciel - the main character- that it began to be a real turn off. For most of the book they seemed to believe she was incapable of doing any thing on her own. So much so that they read her diary, go through her files and apartment, and threaten to lock her in a locker to keep from being involved in the action. This bordered on the creepy, not merely exasperating as Ciel plays it. In this vein Ciel spends a lot of time telling us how incompetent she is, when she isn't. She is supposed to be charmingly bumbling a la Stephanie Plum, but it mostly sounds like she's buying how the guys think of her. Another thing, perhaps minor, but it drove me crazy, Mark, the overbearing CIA operative calls her "Howdy" a nickname from their childhood. It was so annoying I sincerely hope the author drops it in the next book.
All that being said it was a good, mostly fun read, and I will probably read the next one she writes. A good first effort. Let's hope Ciel doesn't sell herself short in the next installment.
