Publisher Description
This coming-of-age classic from "one of the nation's foremost Chicano literary artists" follows a young boy as he questions his faith and beliefs after a curandera woman introduces herbs and magic into his life (Denver Post).
Antonio Marez is six years old when Ultima comes to stay with his family in New Mexico. She is a curandera, one who cures with herbs and magic. Under her wise wing, Tony will probe the family ties that bind and rend him, and he will discover himself in the magical secrets of the pagan past--a mythic legacy as palpable as the Catholicism of Latin America. And at each life turn there is Ultima, who delivered Tony into the world... and will nurture the birth of his soul.

Truly a work of art!!
I wasn’t a fan of reading consistently until I starting reading this book, where it touches on topics related to history, culture, morality, religion, and spirituality. I developed a strong relationship with the main character, Antonio, and of his friend Ultima. As a result, I have a stronger appreciation for life and its people, as well as nature, because of this book. I truly recommend anyone to read this wonderful masterpiece - it made me cry.
Just Wow
This book left me speechless. I have never been into reading books, so I was reluctant to read this, but this book blew me away. I felt like I was actually there next to Antonio throughout his journey. The story floored me and I was brought to tears at the end. I’ve never cried from reading a book before. It’s amazing how well it was written and it connected with me in so many ways. This book has changed my outlook on life and I will be sure to read more books just like this from now on. Bravo Rudolfo Anaya, this was by far the best book I’ve ever read.
