Publisher Description

Deke Slayton was one of the first seven Mercury astronauts--and he might have been the first American in space. Instead, he became the first chief of American Astronaut Corps. It was Deke Slayton who selected the crews who flew the Gemini, Apollo, and Skylab missions. It was Deke Slayton who made Neil Armstrong the first man on the moon.

Deke! is Deke Slayton's' story--told in his own words and in the voices of the men and women who worked with him and knew him best. Deke Slayton's knowledge of how the .S. manned space program worked is the missing piece of every space buff's puzzle. Now, after decades of silence, he tells his priceless stories of those years when American was engaged in the greatest voyage of exploration in human history.

Deke!

I’ve read dozens of books on the space program and this was not the same old story rehashed. Deke adds to the story and sizes his peers up in a way few have done. It was a fun read.

Good job Deke, you went out with your boots on!

No holds barred insiders view of NASA and the space program. Must read!

I give this book five stars not because its the best written most exciting book I've read on the subject but because Slayton and the author disclose the inner workings of the space program with such a level of knowledge, detail and undisclosed info not found elsewhere. Perhaps because it was written at a time where Slayton knew he might be dying of a brain tumor which apparently freed him from sugar coating anything. He names names and describes astronaut personalities and how they were selected for missions and doesn't pull any punches with regards to their strengths and flaws.

It's a must read if one wants to know the inside details on astronaut's personalities and how astronauts were selected!

Wow

Written by one of the original 7 astronauts. Tremendous insight from the man who chose which astronaut would fly, and when. Very easy reading and very interesting.
