Interesting
Great addition to help understand Leon!
A Fan of O'Brien
Tortured is a short story from my favorite character, Leon's point of
view. Serving as a bridge between the end of the first novel Birthmarked and the second book Prized, this story delves into the inner voice of Leon after Gaia escapes the Enclave.
While I enjoyed it, I wanted more (it is about Leon after-all), it didn't satisfy completely. I couldn't help wishing that O'Brien had captured the depth of Leon's character via his verisimilitude. In my humble opinion, if the situation of the story weren't so character specific, the names of Gaia and Leon could have been interchangeable the voice is so similar.
That doesn't mean, however, that I wouldn't recommend it. It's free, it's enjoyable, and I got an additional fix of Leon.
A Must Read!
Read this after Birthmarked but before beginning Prized. It is short, but fills in the gaps that are needed to understand Leon's character when he is first introduced in Prized. Without Tortured, I can see where a reader would despise Leon in Prized, which is not what the author wants from the reader.
