Publisher Description
In Jamil Nasir's Tunnel Out of Death, Heath Ransom, former police psychic turned machine-enhanced "endovoyant" private investigator, is hired to find the consciousness of the rich and comatose Margaret Biel and return it to her body. Tracking her through the etheric world, he comes upon a strange and terrifying object that appears to be a tear in the very fabric of reality. He falls into it—and into an astonishing metaphysical shadow-play.
For Margaret is a pawn in a war between secret, ruthless government agencies and a nonhuman entity known only as "Amphibian." Their battlefield is a multi-level reality unlike anything humankind has ever imagined. When Heath learns to move back and forth between two different versions of his life, and begins to realize that everyone around him may be a super-realistic android, that is only the beginning of a wholesale deconstruction of reality that threatens more than his sanity....

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Nasir (Houses of Time) leaps headlong into the pool of queries about death and what comes after, examining them from fantastic and scientific perspectives, and blending hypotheses with occasionally disjointed storytelling. Heath Ransom, an "endovoyant" who can read other people's emotions, is hired to return a comatose woman's consciousness to her body. As with any mystery, all is not what it seems, leading Random on a metaphysically rich, intellectually challenging investigation into the true nature of death in an intriguing world not too different from ours. What first presents itself as a simple story quickly spirals out of control, with questions generating more questions until symbolism and science threaten to overwhelm plot. The intellectualism elevates the writing, imbuing it with authority, but readers in search of a gripping story won't find one here.
Customer Reviews
An Excellent Blend
A friend emailed me about this book. I had not read any of the author's work before, but Nasir has put together an amazing story, merging cyberpunk, transcendentalism and time travel in ways I did not think could be done. Best of all, his portrait of the future is rooted in science, a logical extension of the tech of today. The main character is a real person, deep as you or I. Need a sequel... Now!
