Publisher Description

National Bestseller

Strange things are happening at Biehl's Academy when this elite school opens its doors to a group of orphans and reform-school rejects, kids at the end of the system's tether. But the school is run by a peculiar set of rules by which every minute is regimented and controlled. The children soon suspect that they are guinea pigs in a bizarre social experiment, and that their only hope of escape is to break through a dangerous threshold of time and space. Peter Høeg's "brilliant" and dystopian Borderliners is a "uniquely philosophical thriller" (Boston Sunday Globe) and a haunting story of childhood travail and hope.

Social Worker 11 ,

One of the best books I've ever read

I agree with the previous reviewer. "Smilla's Sense of Snow" is one of the best books out there, but "Borderliners" is a true masterpiece. The book is so nuanced and subtle and yet there are moments of terror. He has a way of engaging the reader at a deep level, and I never fail to be enthralled however many times I go back and read.

Like Crichton, Hoeg has a deft appreciation of the subtleties of human nature. Reading this book, I at times feel a mirror is being held up. At others, I catch glimpses of people I've been close with all my life, and I am suddenly able to see facets of their personalities in a new light.

Hoeg's protagonist explores time and its hidden layers and meanings. One reflects upon one's own reception of time and its dizzying passage, its ability to leap forward in swift bolts and then lag behind endlessly as life becomes a monotonous, interminable bore.

Time as an instrument for exploring the depths of the book's characters is a highly unusual tool. I can't say enough good things about this book. I don't want to spoil anything for the reader, so I'm leaving this review intentionally vague.

A very, very good book

With Smilla's sense of snow, the author gained global fame and respect as a brilliant writer. and rightfully so. However, in my humble opinion,Borderliners is a true master piece and one of the best books, I have ever read.
