Postscript To Murder

In his first appearance since 1993's Touch and Go, British attorney Lennox Kemp cedes most of the sleuthing duties to his American wife, Mary. Life is not all bliss for the recently wed couple. Kemp has been receiving threatening letters; someone tried to set his house on fire; his car was rammed. Then his briefcase, which contained three of the threatening letters, is stolen, and a local newspaper article about them hints at his checkered past. Before he begins seriously searching for the poison pen, however, an associate in his practice is murdered while standing by Kemp's car, convincing Kemp that the killer had been after him. Kemp feels particularly bad because he knows that the dead man's fiancee and brother blame him for the death. Falling into deep despair, he refuses to investigate. But Mary more than picks up the slack, working with Kemp's good friend, Detective Inspector John Upshire, who gradually and grudgingly accepts her as she proves herself to be a shrewd observer and a bold interviewer. Meek exhibits admirable control, spinning out an intriguing mystery plot held together by believable and sympathetic characters. Fans of this low-key series will delight over the addition of Kemp's American wife and her quietly efficient manner.
