When I requested this title on NetGalley, I didn’t realize this four part serial (which would be combined into one book later on) was already part of a series. I realized pretty early on that I had obviously missed a few things, perhaps prior books, and therefore I found myself a bit lost and confused at the mention of so many characters and a plot that was obviously part of a bigger picture. A mention that this book or part can not stand on its own would have been helpful.
Part 1 covers chapters one through ten.
Despite my mistake, I found myself sucked in to the romance portion between the two main characters. The characters were well developed in this first installment, to the point I felt I knew who they were in the past, who they were in the present, and where they were going. In the mean time, the once strong Rhys felt inadequate and unworthy of the sweet human he couldn’t seem to stay away from after having shared one steamy kiss. The player had become a one woman man, but he kept trying to deny himself any measure of happiness, simply content to just catch glimpses of her. It may have seemed annoyingly chivalrous, but I ate it up. As for Lily, she had been in an abusive relationship but managed to get herself out. She may have left the danger behind, but unbeknownst to her, it had followed her to her new home. I also enjoyed the brewing danger facing the Dragon Kings, and the threat from the villains was chilly enough to leave me white-knuckling my Kindle.
I may not have the full story behind the Dark Kings (the series is a spinoff of the Dark Warriors and Dark Swords series), as I’ve since come to learn, but for Rhys and Lily alone, I’m willing to risk remaining a little confused until I have a chance to start at the beginning. But I need to know what happens next!
