Publisher Description
“Amy was one of those rare people who made an impact . . . She was a bundle of emotions, at times adorable and at times unbearable. . . . Amy’s passing did not follow a clear line. It was jumbled, and her life was unfinished—not life’s natural order at all. She left no answers, only questions, and in the years since her death I’ve found myself trying to make sense of the frayed ends of her extraordinary existence.”
Arguably the most gifted artist of her generation, Amy Winehouse died tragically young, aged just twenty-seven. With a worldwide fan base and millions of record sales to her name, she should have had the world at her feet. Yet in the years prior to her death, she battled with addiction and was frequently the subject of lurid tabloid headlines.
Amy’s mother, Janis, knew her in a way that no one else did. In this warm, poignant, and at times heartbreaking memoir, she tells the full story of the daughter she loved so much. As the world watched the rise of a superstar, then the free fall of an addict to her tragic death, Janis simply saw her Amy: the daughter she’d given birth to, the girl she’d raised and stood by despite her unruly behavior, the girl whose body she was forced to identify two days after her death—and the girl she’s grieved for every day since.
Including rare photographs and extracts from Amy’s childhood journals, Loving Amy offers a new and intimate perspective on the life and untimely death of a musical icon.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
When first approached by a literary agent in 2007 about her daughter Amy, Janis Winehouse had reservations. "Don't do it Mum," Amy said when her mother asked for her thoughts on the matter. "I don't want people to know who I am." Four years later, Amy was dead. In this touching, intimate account, Janis attempts to let the world know who her daughter was, warts and all. The portrait she paints is one of a headstrong and talented girl who had trouble focusing but "could do most things she turned her hand to but only if and when she wanted to." And when it was singing, she excelled. Signed by a management company at just 17, Amy soon found herself on the fast track to stardom and all it entailed. Her substance abuse quickly escalated even before she began work on her second, landmark album, Back to Black, and only got worse until it ultimately resulted in her death in 2011. The elder Winehouse who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis just before Amy's birth questions her actions. Their's was wearying, exhausting tale, but it's one Janis Winehouse felt the need to write and writes well. Those expecting salacious details that didn't make it into the British tabloids will likely be disappointed, but fans who want to get to know the troubled artist a little better will find this a fond remembrance.

MY GOD JANIS
A Proper Bio on Amy’s Life and Career :)
Reflection
What I enjoyed most was how Janis was able to share her many relatable moments with Amy. While reading the book I'd stop & reflect on how many commonalities I can find from being an addict & its impact on relationships, in particular with my mum. I can only imagine who else would find common ground with Janis' story. I truly believe this will captivate whoever has read or hasn't read this yet. It ultimately helped me appreciate my mum that much more & reflect on the impact/influence we've had on each other. The good & the bad.
