A New York Times Bestseller
This essay collection from the “bitches gotta eat” blogger, writer on Hulu’s Shrill, and “one of our country’s most fierce and foulmouthed authors” (Amber Tamblyn, Vulture) is sure to make you alternately cackle with glee and cry real tears.
Whether Samantha Irby is talking about how her difficult childhood has led to a problem in making “adult” budgets; explaining why she should be the new Bachelorette (she's "35-ish, but could easily pass for 60-something"); detailing a disastrous pilgrimage-slash-romantic-vacation to Nashville to scatter her estranged father's ashes; sharing awkward sexual encounters; or dispensing advice on how to navigate friendships with former drinking buddies who are now suburban moms (hang in there for the Costco loot!); she’s as deft at poking fun at the ghosts of her past self as she is at capturing powerful emotional truths.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Nobody could narrate these brash, hilariously real, and sometimes shocking essays but Samantha Irby herself. The outspoken blogger’s biting wit spares nobody, least of all herself; she lets it all hang out in the most personal way possible. Whether she’s dishing on her reality TV obsessions (BTW, we totally agree that she’d be great on The Bachelorette) or detailing the first time she slept with her now-wife, Irby describes her experiences with the perfect combination of deadpan comic timing, emotional honesty, and unvarnished attitude. The more uncomfortable the topic, the less she holds back…and the harder you’ll laugh.
Customer Reviews
Witty, Gritty
Plan to LAUGH OUT LOUD, tear up, and say “ew cringe…guilty” when you read any and all of Samantha Irby’s prose. We could all learn from her brash honesty (and her IBS). Irby is THE comedic writer of our time. Salivate, Celebrate, Mastrubate! Sam Irby encourages it all.
Depressing
This memoir was repetitive, vulgar and could have been much shorter. Every chapter seemed the same. Self deprecating, righteous and oh so dull. Trying to “shock” the audience with every turn, but predictable chapters for hours on and on. I’m sure as a standup comedian, for and hour, her story May have been more entertaining. Sorry thumbs down. Don’t waste your $$$
