Expecting to assist in the study of a miraculous cell-regenerating substance discovered deep undersea, veterinarian Luke Nelson descends eight miles to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. What he finds there, in a research lab warped by incredible pressure and trapped in utter darkness, is a mounting wave of physical and mental aberrations. Something down there is testing or playing with the scientists and their lab animals. Readers watch as Luke is unpeeled, layer by layer, and reshaped into something terrible. The novel's horror is notable both for quantity and quality. Where some writers shovel gruesome details into their fiction, Cutter (The Troop) uses a front-end loader. However, his sharp observations and choice of details keep readers from getting numbed by the accumulation of catastrophes; each new shock is freshly disturbing. DON’T READ IF YOU’RE AN ANIMAL LOVER!
I won’t lie, I didn’t (couldn’t) finish this book. It was a great book, had all my favorite elements; disease, apocalyptic events, the unknown deep of the ocean (think Sphere) but it also had two elements I avoid at all costs. Dogs and animals dying or hurt and young boys being abducted and vanishing from the face of the earth. If you can get past those things by all means read it, it was very good for as far as I got but I couldn’t get any farther than the abused dog and and the missing small boy. Sorry Nick Cutter
Wonderfully horrifying
One of the best books I have read in a long while. It gripped me and pulled me right down. It was beautifully written. More detail than I have ever thought possible. And horrifying. I will lay awake tonight, unable and unwilling to sleep. I fear that something from the deep came back up with me and is here right now. If I close my eyes…. Will I wake up and still be who I am?

Loved it! I haven’t read a book this unsettling since I read “It”. I had to stop reading it at night. I recommend reading this if you’re into scary unknowns.
