Publisher Description

The New York Times bestselling author of The Best of Enemies serves up a hilarious new novel of the “sandwich generation.”

Actuary Penny Sinclair has a head for business, and she always makes rational decisions. Knowing that 60% of spouses cheat and 50% of marriages end in divorce, she wasn’t too surprised when her husband had an affair. (That he did so with a woman their daughter’s age? Well, that part did sting a bit.) She just made sure she got everything in the divorce, including their lovely old Victorian house. And as soon as her younger daughter has her hipster-fabulous wedding in the backyard, she’s trading it in for a condo in downtown Chicago...

Well within the average market time in her area, Penny gets an offer on the house. But then life happens. Her children, her parents and her ex come flying back to the nest, all in need of Penny’s emotional—and financial—support. Spread thin, Penny becomes the poster child for the “sandwich generation,” when all she really wanted to do was make managing director, buy a white couch, and maybe go on a Match.com date...

By The Numbers

I have always loved Jen's memoirs (read snort laugh out loud LOVE), but I have been lukewarm to her first couple of attempts at fiction, mostly because all I was reading was Jen as the protagonist. So it didn't feel like fiction to me and it wasn't quite up to the amazing circumspection I find in her memoirs (if that makes sense). But I really liked this book. I wish it had gone on a tad longer. I actually wanted to know these characters better. I wanted to know if their effed up lives worked out. A sequel perhaps?

Such a disappointment

Jen Lancaster is one of my favorite authors! Her sense of humor is always biting but never mean...I always laugh out loud often as I read her books.
Sadly, this book was a huge disappointment...not funny or particularly interesting, disjointed with all of the flashbacks, and frankly hard to finish.
I truly hope that this is a stumble...not indicative of her future writing style...I want the "old" irreverent, hilarious and intelligent Jen back!

Number 1 in my book

I loved this book so much! I can't remember when I stumbled upon this author but she seems to share my brain, sense of humor, etc. I truly loved her first three memoirs and enjoyed the other novels okay but somewhere along the way, she seemed to lose her unique "Jennsylvania" voice that was so joyful and funny. This book seemed to recapture that voice and made me fall in love with her writing again. Wonderful plot, characters and current pop culture references made this a quick read and I was sorry to finish the book so quickly!
