Publisher Description
In this striking tragedy of political conflict, Shakespeare turns to the ancient Roman world and to the famous assassination of Julius Caesar by his republican opponents. The play is one of tumultuous rivalry, of prophetic warnings–“Beware the ides of March”–and of moving public oratory, “Friends, Romans, countrymen!” Ironies abound and most of all for Brutus, whose fate it is to learn that his idealistic motives for joining the conspiracy against a would-be dictator are not enough to sustain the movement once Caesar is dead.

Highly Recommend
I read this in high school and didn’t remember anything besides Caesar dies and the “Friends, Romans, countrymen” speech. I was excited to read this again, and I’m so glad I did. I really enjoyed this play.
In the end, it’s hard to choose who was good or bad, right or wrong. It seems that everyone had, or thought they had, something personal to gain from the actions they each took. Everyone thought their reasons for acting were just. I really did not remember everyone “falling on their swords.”
Well worth the read. Fast paced. Engaging. Entertaining. Some comic relief in a few places (or maybe that was just me).
