Publisher Description

In 1940 Steinbeck sailed in a sardine boat with his great friend the marine biologist, Ed Ricketts, to collect marine invertebrates from the beaches of the Gulf of California. The expedition was described by the two men in SEA OF CORTEZ, published in 1941. The day-to-day story of the trip is told here in the Log, which combines science, philosophy and high-spirited adventure. An exhilarating and highly entertaining read.

Sea of Life

This is a book ostensibly about poking around in rock pools but in between and in the biography of Ed Ricketts in the appendix there are parts that have moved me deeply. I have just finished it and am still searching for words! Steinbeck was clearly someone of great wisdom and humanity some of his breadth of view may be due to his friendship with Ricketts.

His letter to his son has recently gone viral read this to get to know the man.

I have been following their travels on google maps on this iPad which helps with the less interesting parts
