The End of the Party
A book that manages the wonderful double of being both meticulously researched and enormously enjoyable to read. The shear disfunction of the key protagonists of the New Labour project sometimes defies belief and certainly warns the reader of against accepting too much in their own memoirs at face value.
The miracle is that so much was done and that Britain was changed so much when there was so much conflict between the two most powerful figures in Britain.
Rawnsley is broadly sympathetic to both Mandelson and Blair, their strengths apparently significantly outweighing their weaknesses. Whereas passages complimentary to Gordon Brown are far harder to find, indeed the central narrative of the book is how he spent a decade using every fibre of his being plotting how he was going to become PM without having any sense of what he was going to do when he got there.
A simply wonderful read, I was entertained and enlightened and wholeheartedly recommend it.
