A handy pocket guide to modern classics
On the surface, it may seem that this book is just a catalogue, but for me at least, it’s a handy pocket guide to the Penguin Modern Classics range. I used to work in a bookshop, and I can’t remember how many of these beautiful editions I would see while stacking shelves, only to forget their title or who the author was. This book has solved my problem as seeing several titles in the list immediately jogged my memory - I can now highlight them they don’t escape me for a second time. Having the list by both author and title is also very helpful if you can remember one but not the other and don’t have an internet connection next time you’re at the bookshop. You also get the George Orwell essay, which was an enjoyable short read and despite the pre-decimal pricing he writes about to make his point, this still seems relatively fresh.
