This outstanding debut book by Yas Gyasi is a book not like many others that I have read. All week this book has stayed in my mind. At times I wanted it to be finished especially with the heartbreaking parts.
It starts off about two half sisters Effia and Esi unbeknown to each other. One sold into slavery and the other was hated by her stepmother and ended up married to a slave trader.
The story captures the raw pain of the slaves lives in Ghana and the trivial reasons for being put into jail and black against white.
Yaa does not gloss over the atrocities and it was almost like every word had a complete purpose. We see what happens to both sisters along their different paths and how it affects the generations to come.
Such an uncomfortable but necessary read, I went through so many emotions, I highly recommend it
