Not my favourite

The storyline was ok but the fact she just walked out on her husband niggled at me. It’s mentioned that she loved him yet she so quickly decides to Abandon him and actually in the grand scheme of the book doesn’t actually think about him very often after leaving and when she does it’s very brief and without any real depth, longing or even missing him. To my recollection she only wonders once if he’s any better from his shell shock. I also found it hard to believe she would leave simply because of one bad incident with Agnes though admittedly bad. We aren’t really told of any other incidents where she was really awful, just overbearing. Would that be enough to make a woman leave her husband, who she supposedly loves, shell shocked or not? It seemed the whole start of the book and her reason for leaving was rushed to get to the main story once she leaves hallsands. When reading the first chapter I had the idea that perhaps he would recover and go looking for her for them to reunite, not for her to forget about him entirely. She doesn’t even react that strongly to his death, she doesn’t seem saddened at all. Everyone she does confide in acts like it’s perfectly fine to abandon your husband whose mental health has been impacted fighting for his country. It felt like we were meant to steered in the direction that she had no choice and then became this strong woman but my overall impression of Betty/Mable was that she was actually a very selfish woman and rather cold hearted. I also found the whole medium aspect distracting, it really had no purpose to the plot other than to provide the means for mable to find out that Agnes was being tried for Murder and it felt like it was only put in there for this purpose. Her seeing it in the paper would have made much more sense. I can’t think of a reason as to why else to have it? It’s very random and doesn’t go anywhere, she doesn’t make a career or it and it just stops happening.

In my opinion, this book doesn’t compare at all to the likes of Belle, Hope, Charity, Stolen, Remember me, Father unknown and many other amazing stories by this author.
