APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
The synopsis of Your Word or Mine may seem familiar to fans of Sarah Vaughan’s Anatomy of a Scandal, but it offers plenty more besides. The witness-turned-prosecuting lawyer plotline gets a fresh treatment here, when a 15-year-old assault victim becomes barrister Ava Knight, who is once again confronted by her attacker in a courtroom 18 years later—only this time, he’s the victim. The story is told through multiple points of view and in short, sharp chapters which mean that even settling in for only a few pages will put you through the emotional wringer—though Middleton’s handling of some very sensitive subjects is delicately done. It’s addictive reading: a compelling storyline, strong characters (some likeable, some very much not), and a protagonist who loves to do stressful, scary things make for a novel that is to be enjoyed with a clear diary and ideally all the lights on.
