Publisher Description

Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction

Everyman
is a candidly intimate yet universal story of loss, regret and stoicism.

The novel takes its title from a classic of early English drama, whose theme is the summoning of the living to death.

The fate of Roth's everyman is traced from his first shocking confrontation with death on the idyllic beaches of his childhood summers, through the family trials and professional achievements of his vigorous adulthood, and into his old age when he is stalked with physical woes.

The terrain of this powerful novel is the human body. Its subject is the common experience that terrifies us all.

Philip Roth “Everyman"

Exceptional book by an amazing talent. A look at life and death with all its frailty. A writer not cliched or even aware of social media, I’m sure if at all he would have distained it. A sentence for any mature reader from the book sums it up “ There’s no remaking reality, just take it as it comes. Hold your ground and take it as it comes”

Everyman

Roth at his usual extraordinarily high standard. This book is particularly accessible.

A tale told of a man's life starting with his funeral and one where you never learn his name because his name is not important; it is the life of every man that is told. However the story is well worth reading. The descriptions are very powerful and on occasions moving. I look forward to reading this book again. It is encouraging for everyone to know that what we experience is not unique as we
age and to give us an indication of what we can expect.
