Publisher Description
In the English town of Ennistone, hot springs bubble up from deep beneath the earth. In these healing waters the townspeople seek health and regeneration, rightousness and ritual cleansing.
To this town steeped in ancient lore and subterranean inspiration the Philosopher returns. He exerts an almost magical influence over a host of Ennistonians, and especially over George McCaffrey, the Philosopher's old pupil, a demonic man desperate for redemption.

A brilliant read
This is one of my favourite novels ever and probably my top Iris. The rich picture she weaves is full of memorable characters, huge emotions and a plot of mythic proportions. It is also action packed.
The baths at Ennistone are a weird combination of the ancient and the futuristic, the philosopher himself is quite repugnant but compelling.
The whole thing is just brilliant. A bit melodramatic perhaps, but so well written, just a joy.
