I’m a fan of Sophie Kinsella so I was very excited to read this book.
The story follows Samatha a high flying solicitor in London whose life is completely consumed by her work. Samantha unfortunately makes a big mistake on one of her cases which has disastrous consequences. So what does Samatha do? She runs away, literally! She begins a new life in a rural village where she is mistakenly hired as a domestic housekeeper. The problem is Samantha has no idea how to cook or clean. Thankfully there is a handsome gardener, Nathaniel, on hand to help her out 😉.
I enjoyed this book. I’d recommend it to anyone who wanted a light read.
I do have to admit that I found it completely unconvincing that such a smart high flying lawyer could be so utterly useless in other areas of her life. I work in a law firm myself and have the pleasure of being surrounded by ambitious, talented and smart women on a daily basis. From my experience personally most of the solicitors and barristers that I work with are phenomenal businesswomen and are also superwomen in their home life too. Most of them balancing a busy work life with families too. So on that note maybe I’m not the best person to comment on this aspect of the storyline as I struggle to be objective.
I also couldn’t quite get over the characters awful handling of the media detailed within the book. The legal profession by nature is embodied in confidentiality and I just didn’t find this part plausible at all.
Criticisms aside, it was an enjoyable read overall and it helped take my mind out of lockdown. I mean who doesn’t love a romantic comedy 🤷🏻♀️
