Publisher Description

From the NUMBER 1 bestselling author of LIFE AFTER LIFE, SHRINES OF GAIETY and NORMAL RULES DON'T APPLY

On a peat and heather island off the west coast of Scotland, Effie and her mother Nora take refuge in the large mouldering house of their ancestors and tell each other stories.

Nora, at first, recounts nothing that Effie really wants to hear, like who her father was - variously Jimmy, Jack, or Ernie. Effie tells of her life at college in Dundee, where she lives in a lethargic relationship with Bob, a student who never goes to lectures, seldom gets out of bed, and to whom the Klingons are as real as the French and the Germans (more real than the Luxemburgers).

But strange things are happening. Why is Effie being followed? Why is everyone writing novels? Is someone killing the old people? And where is the mysterious yellow dog?

Kate Atkinson, Emotionally Weird

Every time I try to open this book (which I purchased, not a sample) it causes my iPad to crash. I would like to know who to contact and how to go about getting it downloaded again or failing that, a refund.

Disappointing

I have read a number of Kate Atkinson's books and always really enjoyed them. Despite persevering with this book I am going to admit defeat. I found the book more depressing than funny and the characters totally unappealing. Expect most authors have a dud and this seems to be it. Would not recommend.

Not my favourite

Yes, it is weird, but not in the way her other books I've read so far are. I don't like this at all, the descriptions of down-at-heel and basically disgusting life-styles might be realistic but personally I don't want to read them. I loved Life After Life and Human Croquet. This one, I doubt I will finish.
