'Charming ... shows that not all books about Russian aristocrats have to be full of doom and nihilism' - The Times, Books of the Year

On 21 June 1922, Count Alexander Rostov - recipient of the Order of Saint Andrew, member of the Jockey Club, Master of the Hunt - is escorted out of the Kremlin, across Red Square and through the elegant revolving doors of the Hotel Metropol.

Deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the Count has been sentenced to house arrest indefinitely. But instead of his usual suite, he must now live in an attic room while Russia undergoes decades of tumultuous upheaval.

3.5*

At 462 pages this book is not for the faint hearted and certainly for the first hundred or so pages, I struggled to get into this meandering story, finding the writing style flowery and elaborate. Having persevered I finally found myself connecting with the characters only to find the ending rather ambiguous.

Beautifully written

Loved this book. The language used is full of phrases I wish I could have written.

A total joy

What a wonderful read. Couldn’t put it down. The characters were wonderful and as I read I began to really feel I knew them and had pictures in my head of how they all looked. The same with the description of The Metropol I felt I knew the inside of the hotel and the corridors and rooms became familiar.
Loved this book.
