Publisher Description

Something odd is going on at the Fetch Brothers Golf Spa Hotel. Receptionist Bryony Mailer has noticed a definite tendency towards disappearance amongst the guests. She’s tried talking to the manager, she’s even tried talking to the owner who lives in one of the best cottages in the grounds, but to no avail. And then a tall, loping remarkably energetic guest (wearing a fetching scarf and floppy hat) appears. The Fourth Doctor thinks he’s in Chicago. He knows he’s in 1978. And he also knows that if he doesn’t do something very clever very soon, matters will get very, very out of hand.

Patrick Sprout ,

A engrossing and thoroughly enjoyable Fourth Doctor adventure.

A.L. Kennedy may not be someone you'd instantly associate with Doctor Who but that doesn't stop her being a massive fan. Her love for the Fourth Doctor pours onto the page - she was clearly rather passionate about the show as a child. She's chosen to not give the Fourth Doctor a companion (despite the chance to choose from a colourful range of assistants) but instead has the Time Lord start off alone. However he swiftly acquires two new and very perceptive friends.

The villain of Kennedy's story is a direct tip of the cap to a certain Tom Baker era writer but the gruesome nemesis is the eponymous Death Pit and my, is it creepy.

There's a fun swimming pool scene - although it gets rather scary - and three hundred and sixty degree characterisation. The Fourth Doctor's interior monologue is enlightening but there's a lack of the TARDIS and the Doctor isn't actually the main character. These are the only flaws in an otherwise thoroughly likeable and beautifully written story.

I hope Kennedy returns in the future because she's very good at writing for Doctor Who.
