Double Olympic gold-medal winner, James Cracknell. His story before and after his life-changing accident.
In October 2011 James Cracknell, two-time Olympic gold-medal rower and one of the greatest endurance athletes the world has ever known, suffered a seizure at home as his young son looked on in horror. A man who had known no limits, a man who had practically achieved the impossible, was now struggling to master life's simple challenges.
A year earlier, as James undertook yet another endurance challenge in Arizona, he was knocked off his bike by the wing mirror of a petrol tanker. It had smashed into the back of his head at high speed, causing severe frontal lobe damage. The doctors weren’t sure if he would recover and, if he did, whether he would ever be the same again.
Touching Distance is an extraordinary, honest and powerful account as James and his wife Bev confront for the first time the lasting effects that the accident has had on their lives. It is the story of a marriage, of a family and of one man's fight back to be the best husband and father he can be.

Really inspirational
I would recommend this book as it really touches the heart. It's a really honest account of their lives and would like to thank James and Bev for letting me into a part of that. Zoë
Insightful, fascinating, powerful and educational read.
I love to read biographies about people who push themselves way out of their comfort zones. After reading Ben Fogles Everest account “Up” and his mention of James Cracknell I felt inspired to read about him. I had no idea what an amazing read it would be. Of course those of us over a certain age recall James Olympic Gold with Sir Steve but I didn’t know much about the rest. His determination to win knew no boundaries and I love these understated accounts of his achievements. Interspersed with Bev’s frank and insightful accounts there is no doubt this lady understands and supports her husband 100% whilst being truly successful herself (this woman should be applauded) The biggest revelation of all though is the powerful message about life after a brain injury. Written and explained in a way only people living this ordeal could articulate. Through the power of 1 (rather large) wing mirror this family’s lives changed for good. As a result of this read I have so much empathy for their circumstances. Brilliantly written by both. Much respect and thanks for their honesty and insight.
