In her warm and witty debut novel, Jane L. Rosen writes a love letter to New York City and the tapestry of women who come here with high hopes and big dreams. A little black dress hasn't gotten this much attention since Breakfast at Tiffany's. Whether you're in a stylish sheath or your flannel pajamas, this book will make you feel like a million bucks. - Katie Couric
A charming story that twists the lives of New Yorkers around a little black dress... It all works. Each scenario is revisited and broadened as the chapters unfurl... Interesting Premise
This is the story of a little black dress (LBD), the hottest dress of the season and how it impacts the lives of the women who wear it. For some it leads to love, for others opportunities but for all significant changes.
First up is Sally Ann Fennely, an unknown model at her first fashion show. The dress brings her fame and opportunity on the front cover of a fashion magazine.
Then there is young Natalie Canaras (Bloomingdales shop assistant) and Stanley Trenton (aka Jeremy Madison, Hollywood actor). Felicia (middle-aged executive assistant) and her widowed boss, Arthur Winters. Andie Rand (private detective) and John Westmont (wealthy scholar). Sophie Stiner (unemployed Brown graduate) and Thea Baxter (slush fund baby and Christies employee). Jordana Winston (Hollywood screen star and Broadway diva) and Medina Karim and her sister Shireen (burqa wearers). Finally there is Samantha Schwartz (design student) and an unknown woman designated as Cruella de Vil on steroids. The stories are cleverly interwoven with the help of minor characters such as, Ruthie and Tomas (3rd Floor Ladies Dresses, Bloomingdales), Hank and Albert (Jeremy's agent and publicist), Sherri (Arthur's bimbo girlfriend) and Caroline Westmont (cheating spouse of John).
This is an enjoyable story that I might have overlooked in the normal way of things but I am so glad that I didn't miss.
