Cleverly written and compelling! I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
Oh, what a great book this is! We know from page one that Oscar is missing and by chapter three they’ve found his body. I love a book that gets straight to the action, this helped grab my attention from the start and then I was hooked until the final page.
Beth can’t quite believe what they are saying. Her husband Oscar has been found dead and it looks like he took his own life. Why would he do that? He wasn’t depressed, well not that she’d noticed. Things weren’t all that rosy between them, but she is sure he wouldn’t leave her and the kids in this way.
We follow Beth in this story as she learns more and more about her husband and begins to wonder if she ever really knew him at all. As secrets are revealed it certainly looks like Oscar had a good enough reason to end his life, but it also looks like others may have had a pretty good reason to end it for him!
My detective skills were definitely on point for this story as I managed to guess a lot of the twists, but the great thing is I still had that element of doubt each time. Thinking am I right or aren’t I. You may think this makes the book sound predictable, but I wouldn’t say that at all. What I would say is that it is a very well written and cleverly plotted story that played out exactly as I wanted it to, resulting in the perfect ending. I honestly wouldn’t change a thing!
The characters were interesting people and I felt hugely suspicious of them all at one time or another. Some were more likeable than others and I think Jo created the perfect mix. I loved the short chapters, I always find that this makes the book easier to read, it doesn’t make it easier to put down though!
I think this book would make a great TV drama. I have the perfect vision in my head of the setting and the characters, let’s hope it is one we see on our screens soon.
